I know what you are saying, but I think there is a wide range of game types in between here. I am very reluctant to be in the type of game where pre-scripted things happen to my character without my say. OTOH, I get completely bored with games where the PCs midlessly explore one dungeon after the other with no sense of purpose or motivation...

Totally agree with Havard - railroads I can do without but the absence of story makes for a dull game.
So, this really isn’t about railroads.
Let me put it another way: The more I feel like an author during sessions, the less I enjoy the game.
Feeling like an author during prep-time is fine, since I like backstories and the affect they have on play.
And I do find that purpose/motivation is a necessary ingredient to playing a character.
